My mother (75) and father (80) have lived in the same home and town for the last 24 years. It’s the house that I grew up in during jr. high and high school. A few years ago my father was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease and my mother has had several health issues recently, making it harder for them to live on their own. So they sold the house and this past weekend my wife and I picked them up and moved them 300 miles away to an independent living and retirement community near my sister and uncle.
It’s a big change for them and everyone else in the family but we know that it’s all for the best. My mother made a handful of new friends on the first day and the programs there focus on Alzheimer’s and memory care for my dad. Getting older isn’t easy and change isn’t either but they are happy about their new situation and excited to see what the future holds for them in this new chapter of their life.
